Monday's earthquake in central Italy caught my attention. It was centered near the city of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. L'Aquila is about 50 miles north of the village where my great-grandfather was born (called Villavallelonga and highlighted in yellow on the map above).
Since tremors were felt in Rome 60-70 miles west of L'Aquila... it is very likely that the quake was felt in that small mountain village. Hopefully, no serious damage. In 1915, a 7.0 earthquake leveled my great-grandfather's village (along with many other villages in the Abruzzo region). Here's a link on Wikipedia that describes it...
My prayers go out to the residents and rescuers.
