Man of Steel... 70 year old Superman

Superman is 70 years old this year. He is one of the longest continuously published fictional characters. Every month, for 70 years. And he's spawned a dynasty of other very famous characters in comics, radio, television, and movies. Superboy, Supergirl, Krypto the Super-Dog, Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Lana Lang, the Legion of Super-Heroes.... and hundreds...thousands more.

I remember the first issue of Superman I bought. Below is the cover, thanks to Grand Comic Book Database. It was Superman #283. The cover date was January 1975. But comics are post-dated... so it was actually released in October or November of 1974.

But who owns Superman? Right now the heirs of his co-creators are in court with DC comics and it's parent companies to settle the copyright issues of Superman. The link at left is to one of many articles found on comic book news web sites. It's even in wikipedia....

My hope... that the heirs and the businesses can work together to find a way that will continue to bring Superman and his super-dynasty to the public every month for another 70 years, 140 years... well... forever.

In one place forever
Love will be lost
If you sit too long
At a friend’s fire.
