I learned a lot from my first Social Work instructor. More than once, something he said in class made an impact. One in particular stands out in my mind.
"Every person's life you come in contact with," he said, “be aware there will be a start and a stop.” He was describing the client-worker relationship and how that type of relationship is a temporary one with a start and a stop.
Yet, it applies to all relationships... romantic, parental, sibling, friendship, business, pet ownership... Every relationship has a starting point and a stopping point. Sometimes a relationship starts and stops and later starts again.
"Tell me what you pay attention to and I will tell you who you are."

Go you must
No guest
Shall stay long
In one place forever
Love will be lost
If you sit too long
At a friend’s fire.
Viking scripture quoted at the end of the broadcast of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
